Listening to these first couple of songs made me realise how in harmony these two guys were performing together, both giving each other enough space to utilise their talents. The album starts out strongly, with “Papercut” having a strong hip-hop influence mixed in with some powerful guitars, and of course some great vocals from both Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda.

I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy this album, but I actually found myself really getting into it. This album is drenched in such sadness to the point it almost becomes uncomfortable to listen to, especially since what happened to Chester. Linkin Park’s form of nu-metal was depressing, melancholic, and despairing.Īnd these three words sum up the album quite well. However the nu-metal label thrown at bands like Linkin Park, Disturbed, Slipknotand Limp Bizkit is a pretty broad one, because in my opinion, all of those bands have a different philosophy. Gritty guitar work, rap-styled vocals and hip-hop influences such as the use of turntables and simple rhythms. And Hybrid Theory provides all of those characteristics you would expect of this time. The album was released in, and also a significant instigator of, the nu-metal movement that exploded into popularity in the early 2000’s. But the rest of the album, is completely new territory. I remember vividly how annoyed I used to get hearing “In The End” seemingly every time I turned on the music channels on TV. Such as “In The End” ( genuinely don’t know how ANYone cannot have heard this one), “Crawling” and “A Place In My Head”. Hybrid Theory is the bands debut album, featuring hits I have heard before that burst into the mainstream media in the early 2000’s. Which way does this one go? Read on to find out… The few tracks I heard in passing were ok at best, but like with other classic albums I’ve reviewed, I thought I had to either cement this opinion with some attentive listening, or realise that I was totally wrong and undervalued Linkin Park’s work. In fact I used to think they were seriously over-rated compared to how much fanfare they get. I have to admit, Linkin Park was never a band I was really drawn to when I started getting into hard rock and heavy metal.
